The Pritzker Prize jury honours Hans Hollein as a master of his craft, someone who, with wit and eclectic taste, draws inspiration from both new world and old world traditions. An architect and artist, he has the good fortune to design museums that are eager to house works of art created by him, be they drawings, collages or sculptures. In the design of museums, schools, shops and public housing, he mixes bold shapes and colours with exquisite refinement of detail and is never afraid to bring together the richest antique marbles and the most modern plastics. The jury praises him as an excellent teacher who, by his example, encourages young people to take great risks, while ensuring that the most important thing is not the designer, but the object designed. He continues to practise relentlessly what he proclaimed on behalf of his fellow architects a quarter of a century ago, at the beginning of his distinguished career: "We give back to man the joy of building".
