In an artistic climate that too often looks backward rather than forward, where retrospection is more frequent than risk-taking, it is important to honour the architecture of Frank O. Gehry.
Gehry's refreshingly original, all-American work, drawing on his populist Southern California perspective, is a refined, sophisticated and adventurous aesthetic that emphasises the art of architecture.
His sometimes controversial but always captivating work has been described as iconoclastic, boisterous and impermanent, but the jury, in awarding this prize, praises this restless spirit that has made his buildings a unique expression of contemporary society and its ambivalent values.
Always open to experimentation, he also possesses a confidence and maturity that resists, as Picasso did, being tied down by critical acceptance or his successes. His buildings are juxtaposed collages of spaces and materials that make users appreciate both theatre and backstage, revealed simultaneously.
While the award rewards a lifetime of achievement, the jury hopes that Mr. Gehry will see it as an encouragement to continue an extraordinary "work in progress", as well as for his significant contributions to 20th century architecture thus far.
