The Pritzker Architecture Prize was established in 1979 to promote greater awareness of how people perceive and interact with their environment.
The first prize is awarded to Philip Johnson, whose work demonstrates a combination of the qualities of talent, vision and commitment that has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the environment. As a critic and historian, he championed the cause of modern architecture and went on to design some of its finest buildings. Philip Johnson is honoured for 50 years of imagination and vitality embodied in a multitude of museums, theatres, libraries, homes, gardens and corporate structures.
