In the current edition, 458 works were submitted, of which the jury selected 45; in the last evaluation, 16 became finalists. The jury particularly appreciated projects which, while being sensitive to the place and critical of function, resolve the complexity of the problems by taking into account the temporal and experiential dimension of architecture; works in which the material and the construction are the fundamental support for the idea. The works selected and shortlisted show, in their great diversity, the wealth of approaches and proposals that make up today's architectural panorama." Among the finalists, the jury has decided to award:
Ephemeral Interventions Les Llàgrimes de Santa Eulàlia /The tears of Santa Eulàlia) Authors: Mariona Benedito Ribelles, Martí Sanz Ausàs, arquitectes, Ana Bádenas, Júlia Doz, Bruguers Gallego, Jordi Juanola, Joan Ruiz, arquitecture students (ETSAB-UPC)
Outstanding work that combines the dynamism of the melting of the spheres of light simulating the Tears of Santa Eulàlia with the metallic sound play produced by the harmonious cadence of their dripping. The sound of the slow rain in a courtyard as a sounding board evokes the coldness of martyrdom and the agonising passage of time, while at the same time marking the perishing of the installation itself. An intelligent exercise in the synthesis of physical phenomena with exciting luminous and acoustic results of poetic scope."
City and Landscape Improving accessibility to the Historic Centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz Authors: Fernando Tabuenca González, Jesús Leache Resano, architects
" This intervention in the Historic Centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz provides a synthetic solution to the problems of the marked topography of the medieval structure of the city and specifically the area around the Old Seminary. In an effective, discreet and sensitive manner, the apse of the Seminary is enhanced, pedestrian routes are taken care of and accessibility is improved by means of mechanical ramps and a lift, all as a result of a desire for silent and lasting integration over time, as befits the temporal dimension of the urban scale."
Interior design São Paulo Library Authors:Patrícia Marques, J.Paulo Costa, architects
"Forming part of the gradual renovation of the 1960s building, with very limited economic resources, this intervention achieves a simple and successful floor plan layout and appropriate equipment for the creation of a unitary, enveloping, simple and serene atmosphere of seclusion, very conducive to reading and study. The light, the precision of the dimensioning and the unitary choice of materials, textures and colours are the basis of the successful architectural intention which, with sensitivity and intelligence, interprets the spiritual needs of the religious community."
Architecture
The jury has decided to recognise the merits of two works which, although diverse, are of great architectural quality:
Casa Bastida Authors: Elisabet Capdeferro i Pla, Ramon Bosch i Pagès, arquitects
"The great improvement in the integration of the pre-existing building in the privileged environment in which it is located is highly valued. The boundaries between building and nature are blurred by means of light vegetation support elements which, in addition to increasing privacy, provide solar protection and improve the relationship between interior and exterior space"
Ozadi Tavira Hotel Author: Pedro Campos Costa, architect
"The renovation of the Hotel built in the 1960s was approached with intelligence and sensitivity, highlighting the values of the original construction. The highlight of this project is the reformulation of the access floor and a new swimming pool area with a pavilion for a cafeteria and changing rooms. The new pavilion, with its complex geometry, is discreetly and subtly integrated between the existing building and the new bathing area, arranging the entrances around the large tree which, with its beautiful presence, articulates the whole. The geometric, spatial and constructive complexity of the pavilion does not support the search for a gestural protagonism, but submits naturally to the architectural will to create, with imagination and freshness, pleasant atmospheres and differentiated spatial sequences, which manage to configure a welcoming whole, in which the architecture accompanies and transforms itself.
