FAD 2007

2007 FAD

"Once again, almost half a century after the founding award, an independent jury of professionals from the world of architecture and design is once again faced with the task of distinguishing between the good and the best of architecture and related creative fields in Spain and Portugal. An award that judges results rather than intentions. This requires distilling an initial, and always difficult, selection from the pool of candidates. All of them are visited by the jury in a series of trips throughout both countries with the aim of evaluating the reality of the architecture in its materiality linked to its needs of use and in a given context. Following these site visits, a second selection of around fifty finalists is made. The jury's final task is the logical conclusion of the reflections and controversies in the selection of the prize winners. This time, the categories reformed last year will be retained:

In the Intervenciones Efímeras (Ephemeral Interventions) section, the jury decided on two different attitudes: one of them valued the specific quality that establishes a strong relationship with Gaudí's architecture and, using a great economy of means, takes advantage of the expressiveness of the material, achieving an installation with a strong visual and sensorial component. In the other, the project had to be housed in a space with very strict limitations. The place has been transformed in its spatiality in an optimal way, proceeding in a similar way as Escher did with his illusory art. The 2007 FAD Award for Intervenciones Efímeras (Ephemeral Interventions) was awarded ex aequo to the works ACCIÓ-EXPOSICIÓ: "VERS UN NOU EQUILIBRI NATURAL..." (TOWARDS A NEW NATURAL BALANCE...) AUTHOR: TONI GIRONÈS SADERRA AND the work M. C. ESCHER AUTHOR: BORJA FERRATER ARQUER, CARLES FERRATER LAMBARRI

The category of City and Landscape arises from the often frustrated conviction that City and Territory are something more than the inevitable place where architects confront each other as best they can. Urban design, landscaping, large infrastructures and also public space are paths that allow us to act on the environment and understand it as a sum of creative activities. This year, the jury regrets the lack of greater participation of works in this redefined category. In this section, this year, the happy synthesis between public facilities, new roads and intervention in a place with undoubted landscape values stands out, with the ultimate aim of regenerating a relatively degraded urban fabric in a minor city on Madeira Island. For all these reasons, the 2007 FAD City and Landscape Award is awarded to CONJUNTO RESTAURANTE E PISCINAS DAS SALINAS AUTHOR: PAULO DAVID

Likewise, in the Interior Design section, the jury decided to award the prize ex aequo to two projects in which different aspects were valued. The first is an intelligent and ingenious proposal that resolves through a system of boxes and offers multiple possibilities of use due to its flexible nature. The result is highly effective and beautiful. The second stands out for the formal austerity of a space representative of economic power without the exhibitionism of opulence. All this is reflected in the careful execution and the restrained choice of natural and noble materials The jury awards the FAD Interior Design  Award ex aequo to: PEDRO BARRIÉ DE LA MAZA FOUNDATION AUTHOR: EMILIO TUÑÓN ÁLVAREZ, LUIS MORENO GARCÍA MANSILLA AND the work BANC SABADELLATLANTIC S.A. AUTHOR: PEPE CORTÉS LEÓN

In the architecture category, the jury opted for an institutional building in a location that does not favour the expression of the public nature of its programme. By avoiding rhetoric, the authors have managed to establish a meaningful presence. The clearly defined form of the building stands out from its banal context in a modest but distinguished way. It is an architecture with an admirable internal consistency and coherence, which in no way claims the status of an icon. Its greatest quality is concentrated in the happy relationship between public condition and surprising inner light with obvious references to local history. The exceptional nature of the building is based on the precise balance between the means and the result achieved. The jury considers that, as an example of good architecture, it is worthy of the 2007 FAD Architecture Award JUDICIAL HEADQUARTERS IN ANTEQUERA AUTHORS: IGNACIO LAGUILLO DIAZ, HARALD SCHÖNEGGER''
