FAD 2019

2019 FAD

The jury's unanimous decision is as follows:

To award the 2019 FAD award in the category of EFFICIENT INTERVENTIONS to the project MIES MISSING MATERIALITY, by the architects ANNA & EUGENI BACH.

The jury highlights "The Barcelona Pavilion was gradually covered with white vinyl until it was stripped of all materiality. With this simple and contradictory action, the walls, floors and pillars become a blank canvas, which opens the door to multiple interpretations on aspects such as the value of the original, the role of the white surface as an image of modernity, or the importance of materiality in the perception of space. The building thus becomes a scale 1 model of itself: 1, real size, showing a finished but at the same time unfinished space. The intervention therefore denies the material to the pavilion in order to enhance its value"

To award the 2019 FAD award in the category of CITY and LANDSCAPE to the project PASEO MARÍTIMO DEL PRAT DE LLOBREGAT, by the team JANSANA, DE LA VILLA, DE PAAUW, ARQUITECTAS.

The jury highlighted the project as "A subtle intervention that manages to combine the desire to preserve and improve fragile natural spaces in the process of degradation with their use, enjoyment and appreciation by the citizens who have to make them their home. The recovery of dune ecosystems, native vegetation and wetlands coexists with internal routes, furniture and recreational and educational uses that respect the environment. The complexity of the work makes it a benchmark and an example for this type of action."

To award the 2019 FAD award in the category of INTERIOR DESIGN to the project RESTORATION OF THE READING ROOM OF THE LIBRARY AND SURROUNDING SPACES OF THE TRADITIONAL BUILDING OF CIBELES DEL BANCO DE ESPAÑA, by architect MATILDE PERALTA DEL AMO.

The jury highlights the project: "The room that was once the core of the first building of the Banco de España (the Bank of Spain)-now used as a library- recovers its original splendour with this intervention, increasing if possible its referential character within the labyrinthine complex of buildings by means of appropriate decisions that reinforce its luminosity and transparency. The balance between the contemporary language and materials and the original architecture is a consequence of the precision in the integration of new functional, mechanical and spatial elements that previous interventions had distorted. The jury values the intense involvement of its author in an attitude that is both respectful and committed: strict and inflexible in the preservation of her architectural values, and radically contemporary in terms of the language applied to the modifications necessary to respond to its current functionality."

To mention the project for the REHABILITATION OF THE CASTELLANA BUILDING, 81 (FORMER BANCO DE BILBAO), by Dr. architect ANTONIO RUIZ BARBARÍN, accompanied by the following reflection:

"The jury wishes to join in the debate, increasingly present in the field of the preservation of the architectural heritage of the 20th century, by recognising the exemplary restoration of this essential work by Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza. The intervention is valued for its neatness and sensitivity in deciding to remove the additions accumulated over almost forty years, as well as the restitution of the original constructive and spatial values. The work has been carried out on the basis of rigorous and in-depth research, which is all the more difficult given the enormous complexity involved in bringing the building's performance up to today's technical and functional standards"

Finally, to award the 2019 FAD award in the category of ARCHITECTURE to the IES PLAYA FLAMENCA (High School), by architect ALFREDO PAYÁ BENEDITO.

The jury highlights the project "It is a building that responds to an extensive and repetitive school programme with the economic limitations that are typical of this type of public work, and yet it is capable of creating an extraordinarily rich space, an internal landscape of its own that is abstracted from an unattractive environment. The clarity of its linear outline contrasts with the changing character of the spatial episodes that follow one after the other as we walk through it. The quality of the interstitial spaces, compressed and expanded, resolved with a limited palette of materials, is accentuated by the expressiveness of structural solutions that free up large open areas in relation to the outdoor courtyard. It is highly valued as a contemporary, innovative and surprising response in the field of school architecture, which is sometimes limited to conventional and closed solutions"
