FAD 2012

2012 FAD

The jury wants to highlight architecture that responds to the real needs of society, that is to say, architecture that moves away from the excesses of the immediately preceding period. Sensible and necessary works that are committed to civic values and that are capable of qualifying the spaces of coexistence.

An architecture of our time that provides the keys to interpreting the future. An a priori conventional commission is transformed into a more intense interpretation using a single resource. The proposal manages to give content to the traditional Christmas lighting without resorting to clichés associated with these dates. The jury declares the work the winner in the category of ephemeral spaces: MAGNÓLIA by JOSÉ ADRIÃO, architect

An ambitious and difficult urban intervention, coherently conceived and rigorously executed, where the richness and complexity of each of its parts generate a new urban landscape - full of life - capable of changing the character and image of the city. A project of projects, based on spectacular modifications to road infrastructures to free up new spaces that serve to unite once segregated neighbourhoods, giving them a new urban quality that revitalises the fabric and allows citizens to live their own city once again. The jury declared the work the winner in the City and Landscape category: MADRID RÍO by GINÉS GARRIDO (TEAM LEADER), BURGOS & MADRID RÍO by GARRIDO / PORRAS LA CASTA / RUBIO & ÁLVAREZ-SALA / WEST 8

A brilliant dialogue between the needs of use and spatial organisation, which allows, in a rectangle of limited dimensions, the development of the activity of cooking and serving, making it compatible with multiple alternative possibilities configured with very simple means. A careful choice of materials, which respond with great success and intentionality, both to functional and aesthetic requirements and to an attitude of profound respect for sustainability.

The jury declared the winner in the Interior Design category the work:TONDELUNA by TONDELUNA RUBÉN PICADO FERNÁNDEZ This jury has decided to award the 2012 FAD Architecture Award to the Matadero Madrid Culture Centre, dedicated to contemporary creation. The award refers both to the global attitude of the proposal, which bravely opts for experimentation and respect for the spaces of freedom managed by civil society, and to the conceptualisation of the project, from its inception in 2007 with the refurbishment of the vestibule and the Intermediae space, to the recent interventions of Nave 16 and Red Bull Music Academy, finalists in this edition of the FAD awards.

The jury values the collective intelligence, the unity inferred by the pre-existing industrial architecture, and that with a minimum of external protagonism of the new interventions, inside it resolves with rigour and authenticity the diverse needs of the extensive programme of the Centre, seeking not only to maintain the architectural spaces and structural forms, but also the character, the atmosphere and above all the unrepeatable passage of time
