PNA 2019

Álvaro Siza Vieira

To award the National Architecture Award for the year 2019 to the architect Mr Álvaro Siza Vieira, at the proposal of the Higher Council of Associations of Architects of Spain and the Galician Association of Architects.

In proposing the award to Mr. Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Jury highlights the value of his unique contribution as a reference for society and the group of architects and architecture students from all over the world, and particularly from Spain. It also underlines his ability to transform the proposals of the modern movement, giving them a new entity without renouncing their original values, and paying special attention to construction techniques as an essential activity for making architecture apparent. The jury valued the historical importance of Álvaro Siza's work, proposing an alternative to excessively technified or costly architecture, achieving prestige and international attention with a work that is not wasteful, which maximises and reactivates the values of the context.
