The 10th Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urban Planning, apart from being a celebration of architecture and urban planning, is an opportunity to reflect on the state of things, on where we are heading after twenty years of a profession that has reaped successes, and also failures, as a consequence of the good situation of the economy in democracy, together with the legacy of the masters who worked to rebuild the country and improve the lives of its citizens.

The need to provide the country with a large number of infrastructures, facilities and housing, and the obligatory deployment of public competitions to guarantee equal opportunities, together with the high quality of the training provided by the schools of architecture, allowed Spanish architects, over the last twenty years, to carry out their activity efficiently and with a certain recognition by the society they served.

However, it would be pointless, because it would be sterile to be satisfied with the successes of the last few years of economic prosperity and not recognise that the current situation is pointing to an apparently less comfortable future, and therefore a future that requires a reformulation of the models that have been used up to now. [...]

We are faced with an activism which, like all creative acts, is the result of dissatisfaction with the state of things, and which has materialised in interventions and actions that open up a new way of approaching the world, by establishing links between very diversified areas of knowledge. An activism in which, in the face of the multifaceted system of specialised publications, it claims the right to be heard and to refute official thought, from the anonymity provided by the network, thus giving rise to a new phenomenon, hitherto unheard of, where analysis and criticism are democratised, broadening the capacity for participation and, therefore, amplifying the capacity to make visible dissatisfaction with the established.

In this panorama altered by the criticism of what we must abandon, the sudden appearance of the economic crisis has made visible that the multiple proposals of a youth disenchanted with the recent past should not only be framed within the purely academic and professional debate, but are deeply rooted in the real problems of a disoriented world, and extend their branches to society as a whole, making present the capacity that youth has to glimpse, from a certain vitalist disenchantment, the future; a future where the discussion on architecture calls for new attitudes, new strategies and new models. [...]

In a world in crisis, the future can only open up to an architecture that is sensitive to its condition as a support for the activities of life; an architecture that is activist from the social point of view and proactive from the political point of view; an architecture that is balanced and generous with nature, that draws its strength from the local conditions of the environment in which it is inserted; an architecture that establishes links with other disciplines and areas of knowledge, without renouncing what is specific to its discipline; an architecture where functional, constructive and formal experimentation coexists with a natural continuity of ways of living and their contemporary reformulations; an architecture whose objectives are not based on a sad and selfish vocation for presence and power but on respect for collective space, which belongs to everyone; an optimistic and generous architecture which, while proposing a better future, does not squander the values of the present and of what is to come...
