Public Space

Throughout history, there is a clear parallelism, a close relationship between space and time, between how the individual and society use their time and how they organise space.

In today's age, which we could well call the Market age, everything ends up governed by mercantile criteria and laws: time is measured in hours and space in metres, and both parameters are valued in pesetas and sold as pure merchandise. The laws of the Market dominate everything. Urban theories also determine the conception and creation of space, and if we add to this the rapid development of the contemporary city, the result is the appearance of diffuse, confused and degraded spaces that end up being dangerous, and which fill those who live in them with uncertainty and unease. [...]

These new urban realities, which are "sudden" compared to the times of development of the Historic City, require new approaches and new intervention responses. In this strategy, Architecture is responsible for the conception and creation of new scenarios, of new urban spaces that satisfy real needs and at the same time serve for public enjoyment.

This is why the Biennial of Spanish Architecture has adopted THE PUBLIC PLACE as the central theme for its 5th edition. And Architecture has as its ultimate aim the creation of comfortable spaces for bodies and also for spirits, and let us not forget: when these dimensions are ignored, meeting social demands becomes a game of arbitrarily formalised forms and is diluted in banal and useless episodes, full of impertinent and ridiculous tics, frequently perverse, which in the end seek nothing more than to hide the bad conscience of their authors due to their inability to be authentic and useful.
