IX BEAU
All these works together give a panoramic view of the excellent Spanish architecture produced in the last biennium.
It is a very varied exhibition in terms of themes, scales and locations, ranging from large facilities to small jewels of single-family housing. In other cases they are innovative re-readings of the genealogy of places, a very significant fact being the wide geographical distribution of the finalist projects, which confirms the interesting dispersion of quality architecture throughout Spain. It is also relevant to note that many works are the result of winning competitions, a healthy practice that is bearing very good fruit as can be seen in this selection. A final point to note in this introduction is the increase in the trend, in relation to previous editions, of works by foreign architects working in Spain in collaboration with local studios.
The biennial prize was won for the first time by a building in the tertiary sector, the Torre Cube in Puerta de Hierro, Guadalajara, Mexico, by architect Carme Pinós Desplat. [...] This Biennial is the first time that an approach to urban planning has been initiated with an explicit recognition of the quality of architecture in the city through the collective housing award and also with the recognition of municipalities that develop integrating and accessibility policies in urban environments.
Flora Pescador Monagas - Director of the IX Biennial and President of the Jury
