Empty Spain / Full Spain

The 15th BEAU aims to shed light on the theme "Empty Spain / Full Spain. Strategies of conciliation" an overview that contributes to the rapprochement and reflection on the capacities for conciliation that can be found in architecture and urban planning in the two territorial realities that exist in the country: that of a dense, populated and mainly urban Spain; and that of another with less density, more invariable and uninhabited, in a historical and social context that is increasingly demanding for both disciplines.

The XV BEAU aims to become a space for reflection on the link between territory and society, a meeting place open to debate with multiple initiatives of its own and parallel initiatives: workshops, forums and spaces for linking architecture and society. On the horizon, it is possible that the coming climate change could lead to population movements between different territorial realities, that societies will have to adapt to a new climate emergency and that technological realities will drive new fields of creation. We believe that this forum for debate should be the beginning of new initiatives that bring together, question and pose questions to a heterogeneous society, in which the diversity of circumstances and problems makes it impossible to find a single answer.

In recent years, the debate between empty and full territory has been the subject of many reflections and social initiatives. The homo laborans or performance society, as the philosopher Byung-Chul Han calls it, has most insistently forged the mythological perception of an empty Spain. The minds of those who live in large communities have imagined the idea of depopulation associated with the wellbeing of the countryside, the outdoors or the lack of stress... and also, on the other hand, the frustration of an idyllic life that does not always coincide with the real one. At the same time, those who live in this less dense country dream of the opulence of the big city, of the opportunities and anonymity of mass culture, even if, once there, they tend to idealise the world they left behind and elevate the stories of the everyday past to heroic narratives.

In this sense, the 15th BEAU aims to be another framework for debate in which to gather and deepen the operational capacity of architecture and urban planning with respect to the different current and future realities in both territories.
